No. The HL2 series as a whole is bad, in terms of story. The gameplay is only supported by the fact that the game us running on the source engine. Otherwise, HL2's only defining gameplay feature is the gimmicky phys-gun. It's either used to block attacks, throw ♥♥♥♥ like barrels & grenades, and solve block puzzles.
While Episode 1 was a good extension of the story, this is a great continuation of it - expanding upon multiple aspects set up in the base game and Episode 1 (and it's more memorable than Episode 1 was). I recommend you buy The Orange Box so you can get the full Half-Life 2 experience (and Portal as well). Now I get to join the wait for Half
